# Robots

A Robotiq.ai robot is an application that runs a process script. It is not a physical robot. You create these process scripts using the Robotiq.ai process editor.

Robotiq.ai has two kinds of robots:

- Development robots
- Unattended robots

## Development Robots

You use a Development robot for setting things up and testing on your own computer. You install the Development robot on your local machine.

You can only run a Development robot locally when a process is being developed. You cannot use it for processes that are in the TEST or PRODUCTION stages.

To get the Development robot, see [Download development robot](https://docs.robotiq.ai/en/article/download-development-robot).

## Unattended Robots

An Unattended robot runs processes automatically on a virtual machine without anyone needing to be there. Installing an Unattended robot is different from installing a Development robot.

### How to Set Up an Unattended Robot

1. **Make a new robot in HQ:**
    - Put it in a department.
    - Add other information it needs.
2. **Install the Unattended robot:**
    - Give it the information about the robot you made in HQ during installation.

Unlike a Development robot, an Unattended robot can only run a process on a virtual machine. It can only run processes in the TEST or PRODUCTION stages.

If you need to run a process that's being developed on a virtual machine, you have to do it locally from inside that virtual machine.

For more on installing an Unattended robot, see [Installation unattended robot](https://docs.robotiq.ai/en/article/installation-unattended-robot).

## **Robots in HQ**

You can manage your robots in Robotiq.ai Headquarters (HQ).

### Add a New Robot

1. Go to **Settings**.
2. Choose **Robots**.
3. Click **Add robot**.
4. Fill in the required information.

When you add an Unattended robot, you can put it in departments. You can also say if the robot is private or shared.

- **Private Robot:** This robot works for a specific department and stage. For example, a private robot might only run processes for the HR department's test stage.
- **Shared Robot:** You can choose which departments and stages the robot works for. This changes which jobs the robot will do. If a robot isn't in a department, it won't get jobs for that department.

### Update a Robot

You can update a robot right from HQ if there's a new version. You don't need to go into the virtual machine.

**Important:** This only works if:

- The robot is an admin user (or you gave admin user details when installing).
- The Robot Monitoring Tool (RMT) is on the machine.

After clicking **Update**, you can see how the update is going by clicking the **Log** button. For more information, see [Robot Monitoring Tool](https://docs.robotiq.ai/en/article/robot-monitoring-tool).

After clicking on the "Update" button, you can track the updating log by clicking on the "Log" button.

### Remotely Restart a Robot

You can restart a robot's virtual machine right from HQ. This is helpful for application updates, if a robot process gets stuck, or for other reasons.

1. As an Organization admin, go to the list of robots.
2. Click **Restart**.

This feature lets you restart the machine with one click, which saves time compared to connecting remotely using RDP.
